So, we've been on vacation for the past few weeks. They were lovely days, full of sunshine and rain, as well as wind, salt, and the sound of either 100,000 cicadas or breaking waves.
We were in Tennessee for a few days before heading down to Florida with my family, and Spencer and I decided to sleep outside one night. Hmm...after enduring the aforementioned 100,000 cicadas and their mating calls for several hours, we settled down to a relatively pleasant sleep. However, we were awakened again at about 5:30 a.m. by a chorus of songbirds in the trees above our heads. Our only reaction was to grumpily trudge inside to our bed. So much for communing with nature.
Once in Florida, we spent several great days on the beach, enjoying the surf, sand, and hundreds of jellyfish and sea slugs floating peacefully around us in the water. Fortunately, no one was stung or injured, though Spencer was absolutely adamant that one of us was going to die of a jellyfish sting. We finally did see the latest Batman movie, too, but I was so confused by the end that it was hard to figure out what exactly had just happened. -sigh-
We encountered several pre-Tropical Storm Fay thunderstorms up in our aerie. I honestly thought at several times we were going to lose the roof on the house and be blown out to sea on the wind. Scary. The gulf after the storm was full of enormous white breakers and a powerful undercurrent. Thank heavens there was a pool at the house!
